Our Weekend

As I'm sure you've heard, the DC area was hit with some nasty storms on Friday night. Ian and I were just sitting, minding our own business, watching ET on TV when all of a sudden, the biggest gust of wind I've ever heard was whooshing outside, it started pouring and thundering and lightning, and next thing I knew the power was out. So we lit candles, I read a book with a flashlight, and it was kind of fun. Obviously I was going to blog about it the next day when the power came back on.

Well, it didn't come back on Saturday. And then it didn't come back on Sunday either. Before we knew it, we were learning how to survive like pioneers. Pioneers who maybe escaped on Saturday night to a movie theatre with power to see Ted (very funny!) and to a birthday brunch with one of my best friends in DC on Sunday morning. But otherwise, we were in the dark.

Ian snapped some photos when he went to Giant to stock up on some food--creepy!

We were pretty much ready for an apocalypse.

I'm not gonna lie, it was irritating. Not being able to use the internet, cell phones, or a hair dryer? Having to go sit at a burger joint to charge our phones so that we could have an alarm clock? It really made me realize how much we all depend on that stuff.

But it wasn't all bad. I did a lot of reading. Ian and I did a lot of talking. We went out for ice cream on Sunday night. And we went to bed early because there was nothing else to do. All in all, it could have been worse-- but I wasn't sad when the power came back on early Monday morning.

Maybe, just maybe, it was kind of refreshing to have a weekend unplugged?

  1. Last year we were hit with Hurricane Irene. I was SOOOO prepared for a power outage. I had coolers, beer, tons of food, flash lights, pots filled with water...you get the idea. Every single person I know lost power. I lost it for about 5 minutes and I immediately lit candles and broke out scrabble. I was a little disappointed.

  3. That photo of the grocery store shelves is crazy! Some people in South Jersey lost power from those storms and still don't have power yet. Luckily the storms near me weren't quite as terrible.

  4. Glad you guys are fine, those grocery store shots are totally eerie. It's so hard for me to unplug, I can imagine how difficult it must have been for you!

  5. We didn't lose power but our AC conked out. The shelves at Target were the same way. It made me think of that new show coming in the fall called Revolution. It's from the creator of LOST. If you haven't seen a clip you should Google it.

  6. Our power in our county went out for a night last year. It was irritating and you do realize how much you rely on electricity but it was kinda fun. But ONLY for one night..and I was super annoyed that some of our food would go to waste in the fridge. You kinda had it rough but it can be nice to be unplugged for a bit.

  9. That is soo crazy. I did hear about this. I'm glad everything is alright! I think it would have been fun in a way to see how it's like to live without electricity. I bet you're glad it's back on haha
