Well, anyway. Remember our traveling nightmare last month where we were compensated with free round trip tickets to anywhere Airtrain goes? Well, we initially had no plans of a summer/anniversary vacation, but when presented with free airplane tickets, the possibilities seemed endless. Should we go back to Jamaica? Try another location in all-inclusive land?
Well, it turns out using airline vouchers to those popular summer locations is a lot harder than it sounds. Because it sounds too good to be true. Non-paying customers are pretty much given the last priority when it comes to booking a summer trip, meaning that unless you wait until the last minute to snatch one of the reserved voucher seats, it's not happening. Having a real job sure makes a spur of the moment trip difficult (unless you're my lucky husband who works in a school....).
So an exotic trip might be out, but we are trying to find a fun place in the US for an affordable long weekend getaway. I don't know about you, but this is the first summer in the real world, and having some kind of vacation to look forward to sure would be nice. I love the idea of setting out to a new city that neither if us have been to, even if for a short period of time. I'm already thinking of my summer travel essentials...
A retro suitcase.
Loud and bright sunglasses.
High-waisted shorts. (I have a pair that I snagged on my last thrifting adventure that I'm just waiting for the right moment to wear.)
And cute sneakers. Because I have learned that I'm turning into a grandma and my feet cannot handle walking long distances in flip flops anymore.
So here's my question, friends. Where have you gone or would suggest for an affordable weekend getaway? I have a list of places, including Austin, Seattle, San Antonio, New Orleans, and Boston. I know some of my readers live in some of these locations and I would love to hear some of your favorite spots!

ReplyDeleteSummer vacation. What's that? I really need one too. I'd suggest San Diego. It's beautiful and you can visit LA too if you want while you are there. It's too bad they make those vouchers so hard to use. It's like here is your reward for what we put you through good luck cashing in!

ReplyDeleteI've been to Boston several times and loved it. You can find really affordable hotel rooms if you're willing to stay slightly outside the city and take the T in. The fun-est thing to do in Boston is visit the Sam Adams brewery (in my opinion).

I highly recommend Austin! If you love music it's an amazing place to visit. Also it's a fun city with tons to do and it's not expensive. I have a huge list of recommendations if you choose to go there. I've been several times. I also LOVE San Diego. It's a fun area and only 3 hours from LA so you could hit both cities and Mexico as well (Tiajuana is just over the boarder).

ReplyDeleteSanta Fe!!! You'd have to fly into Albuquerque, but then it's an hour train ride (or car drive if you wanna rent a car) north - very easily done, I think. And Santa Fe is BEAUTIFUL. Plus it doesn't get nearly as hot in the summer as ABQ or, for that record, Austin (a city I also love - but it gets *warm* come June/July/Aug!).
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure what kind of budget you've got, but the hostel at Santa Fe is only a mile walk from downtown, and while it's very hostel-y, I've a certain fondness for it. About $30/night for a private room, so much cheaper than the other hotels within walking distance. You can make reservations by mail and cheque two weeks out.
And the FOOD. Oh, the food. Plus, the Indian Market every day, plus - depending on when you go - concerts in the plaza, plus gallery after gallery of incredible art, plus the Georgia O'Keeffe museum... (I'd live in Santa Fe, if I could. Can ya tell?)
